Innovator-in-Residence
>Week 1 Goals
Model
- Simplify
- Replace sliders for numbers of people and reproduction with fixed parameters that keep populations constant
- Consider reducing number of counters and replacing with graphical display
- Solicit input re “real / policy maker” path vs. “game / educator” path
- Policy maker: Identify and obtain estimates for quantifiable parameters
- Educator: Explore map importation function
Dissemination and translation
- Brown bag: Add more context slides to Prezi to include role of systems models and other types of models
- Webinar: Get more suggestions for speakers re models – ideally, one each for agent-based, system dynamics, and network analysis
- Website (emoyusa.github.io)
- Update site as repository of apps
- Consider section about Innovator-in-Residence; possible inclusion in AH blog
>Week 1 Progress
Model
- Solicit input re “real / policy maker” path vs. “game / educator” path
- Received support for both development paths
- Plan to work on "policy maker" path for 2 weeks and then "educator" path for 2 weeks
- Simplify
- Realize that "policy maker" model will require a complete rebuild
- Will consider new "policy maker" model as base for "educator" model
- Policy maker
- "Real" model will need to be built in stages
- Stage 1 requires stable population model with real age distributions and real mortality rates; will try 2010 BRFSS for populations distributions and 2008 NCHS life tables for mortality for different age groups
- Stage 2 will add concepts of "sickness" (fair or poor self-reported health) and modifiable risk factors of sickness (smoking, no exercise, and obesity)
- Stage 3 will add environmental and health care factors that can affect risk factors, sickness, and mortality
- Stage 4 will add in concept of "disparities"
- Educator: Will work on after 2 weeks on "policy maker" model
Dissemination and translation
- Work with AH
- Brown bag done; prezi posted on main page
- Will consider follow-up with training session on modeling and other data visualization techniques; possibly useful back home as well
- Thinking about support of disparities interest group and connecting with HIT IG while I am here
- Plan to attend AH Translation and Dissemination Institute mini-retreat
- Webinar: Still identifying potential speakers
- Website (emoyusa.github.io): Updated and will update weekly
Bonus: Volunteered in evening with AH staff at DC Central Kitchen; shucked corn and helped make chicken stew
